How do you know if you’ve picked the right person?

When it comes to finding the right therapist that works for you, it doesn’t necessarily always come down to their skill and experience. In the therapeutic process or while you are trying to heal, the most important factor comes down to your relationship. Do you feel empathy from them? Do you share the same goals? Do you have an alliance with the therapist? Is it a good cultural fit?

Do you like each other?

It’s worth it in the long run for both your healing process and relationship to spend the time to find a therapist that you have a good fit with.

Here are some tips to keep in mind while you’re searching:

Talk to friends and Family.

Maybe they are or know someone who is seeing a therapist that they have made a good connection with.

Go Online.

There are tons of resources and therapists available in your area that’ll help you find what you are looking for.

Gender fit.

Some people have a preferred gender they like working with. There is no right or wrong choice, just whichever is going to best help build a strong relationship.

Call them.

Take a moment to ask them some questions you may have about their practice. Notice how you feel with them on the phone, are you comfortable? How do they speak to you?
