Random Acts of Kindness – you’ve heard of them. They are small acts that we can do in our everyday lives to make small difference in the life of someone else. There are so many small things that we can do like picking up a coffee for a colleague while you’re on break,

or making someone laugh, or just smiling and saying hello as you pass someone on the street.

There is more to Random Acts of Kindness than just making someone smile. It can do a lot for the mental health everyone involved. Showing compassion can reduce depression. It is linked to gratitude and promotes empathy in individuals. Those who are suffering from depression can feel isolated or alienated from the people around them. When performing random acts of kindness, you are kind to those in need, you tend to feel more connected to your community and start to understand that the things that people are experiencing might not be so different from you.

“Feeling connected melds us together rather than divides us. Kindness is potent in strengthening a sense of community and belonging.” – Shoba Sreenivasan, Ph.D., and Linda E. Weinberger, Ph.D.

Over a decade ago a Japanese study found that happy people were kinder than unhappy people, and that physically counting your acts of kindness led to an increased feeling of happiness. Thus leading to people to conduct more acts if kindness.
